Abstract

The Conversational Club of Norristown is a women’s education club founded in 1885 that continues to meet today whose purpose is the “Study of History, Literature, and Art, and the promotion of intelligent thought and conversation.” The collection of the club’s papers consists of records of the meetings and activities of the club from 1885 to 2013 primarily in the forms of minutes, programs, correspondence, and other sources collected by the club.

Scope and Contents M. Carey Thomas was the first Dean and second President—a title she held for twenty-eight years—of Bryn Mawr College. Thomas’s professional and personal lives were both deeply connected to the College, and she is one of the chief architects of the college post-1894, when she began her tenure as President. The Society for Home Culture records includes four volumes: three volumes of minutes, which include tipped in annual reports, and lists of students with the subject they studied, by year; and one volume of a list of books to be studied, which includes the name of items, sometimes a brief description of the item, and the date of publication.
