Overview Carl Barus was a professor of engineering and social activist. He taught in the Engineering Department at Swarthmore College from 1952 to 1985. He was active in negotiating a resolution to the 1969 admissions office sit-in by SASS and subsequently served on the Black Concerns Committee. Contains papers on African American student concerns at Swarthmore from the SASS sit-in in 1969 to minutes and papers of the Black Concerns Committee in the 1980s.
Overview Courtney C. Smith (1916-1969) was the ninth president of Swarthmore College, from 1953 to his death. The collection contains his official correspondence including correspondence with faculty. It includes extensive material on the controversy surrounding the construction of The Blue Route, Interstate Highway 476.
Overview This collection consists of audiocassette tapes of interviews created by Darwin H. and Donna Heckman Stapleton from 1991 to 1999 as research for their 2004 biography, Dignity, Discourse, and Destiny: The Life of Courtney C. Smith. Interviews were conducted with Swarthmore College faculty, staff, students, and Board members, as well as personal friends and family members of Courtney Smith.
