Custodial History

Written in Northern Italy around 1300. Note in 15th-century hand on f. 185r: "Pertinet domino Johanni manus de ellentz pastori in Riola comparatus a Johanne de auca alias de sole dominus." Sixteenth-century ownership note in lower margin of f. 1r: "Ex libris Imperialis Monasterii S. Maximini"; and in the same hand in the top margin: "N. 155". Heraldic bookplate dated 1927 of Cunliffe inside front cover. Inked-out ownership note; catalogue entry no. 791 from Sotheby's [?] catalogue pasted to recto of front flyleaf; on verso of front flyleaf a biographical note on Penafort in French. Obtained from Maggs in 1949 by Howard L. Goodhart (bookplate).

Physical Description

Parchment support.

17th-century white doeskin blind-tooled over beveled wooden boards, remnants of two thin leather ties visible on front and back. Stamped in ink on spine: "RAIMUNDUS/ SUMMA/ MS. CIRCA 1300". Stamped on brown leather label affixed to spine (lower right corner torn away): "REIMUNDI/ DE CASIBU[/ CONSCIE[". Goodhart number on paper label taped to spine.

179 x 119 (143 x 89) mm.

Written in two columns of 33 ruled lines with single horizontal bounding lines on either side of each column and double vertical bounding lines in ink. Prickings for bounding lines and rulings visible in all three outer margins.

Gothic textura script.

Each Book begins with a simple 3- to 5-line red and light blue initial with extensions; chapters begin with 2- to 3-line red or blue initials with contrasting penwork. Running heads in top center margin in red and blue. Rubrication, underlining, paragraph markers, sentence strokes in red. Guide letters for rubricator are visible in outer margin.
