Gurney, Joseph John, 1788-1847
Found in 10 Collections and/or Records:
Henry H. Albertson collection
Includes letters, many of which are by and to William Hodgson (1804-1878). All or most of the letter writers are Friends; a number of them are British Friends. Topics often include visits to other Friends, attending Meeting, health, religious or philosophical reflections, and because of the period of writing, often refer openly or obliquely to the Wilbur-Gurney controversy.
Thomas Wistar Brown papers
Cope Family Papers
The Cope family was a Quaker family of Chester County and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore, Maryland. The collection contains family correspondence, genealogical papers and legal papers, a journal (1823) of Ann (Shoemaker) Janney, and other papers of the Cope and related Shoemaker, Yarnell, and Janney families. Individuals represented include Mahlon Day, Joseph John Gurney, and John Janney.
Thomas Evans papers
John Joseph Gurney manuscript
The manuscript of John Joseph Gurney includes three parts: "Charlemania Part I," Charlemania Part II," and "An Afternoon at Cambridge and a Morning at Oxford."
According to notes from the curator of Haverford College's Quaker and Special Collections, the manuscript is in the hand of Joseph John Gurney, but is "possibly written in the hand of Anna Gurney, who gave it to Ann Hodgkin, possibly as a wedding present."
"Corrections of Journey in North America"
This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript by Joseph John Gurney, which lists corrections to the published manuscript, “Journey in North America, described in familiar letters to Amelia Opie.” Each page of the volume is numbered so that the corrections on each page match the corresponding page of the published version.
Mary B. Parson correspondence
This collection includes personal correspondence between Mary B. Parsons and members of the Braithwaite family, primarily Anna and Isaac Braithwaite. Letters concern family matters and, occasionally, meeting activities at Flushing and Kendal and news of Joseph Gurney and Elizabeth Fry. Other correspondents include J. Bevan Braithwaite and Martha G. Braithwaite.
