Receipt book, 1871-1880

 Item — Volume: 56

Scope and Contents

This receipt book records receipts issued for various expenditures, especially payments made to individuals providing services to the College, from 1871 to 1880. From 1871-1875, most of the entries are for salaries paid and payments related to running the Haverford farm. The years 1876-1878 increasingly become what might be labeled a "payroll register," continuing to record payment of faculty salaries but also adding more than thirty employees paid by the month for work on the grounds and farm, in the dormitories, and in food service. Entries recorded between November 8, 1878, and March 27, 1880, relate exclusively to student organizations that almost certainly were the recipients of distributions of fees collected by the College on their behalf. These organizations include the Everett Society, the Athenaeum Society, the Loganian Society, and the Haverfordian.
