 Item — Volume: 1

Scope and Contents

This ledger lists the subscribers to the sale of stock for $100 a share in the Friends Central School Association, the original name for the organization that was chartered as the Haverford School Association on April 4, 1833 and later became Haverford College when the charter was amended on March 15, 1856 granting the School the power to confer college degrees.

The ledger begins with this declaration: "We the subscribers hereby severally agree to pay to such person or persons as we, or a majority of us, shall hereafter appoint to receive the same, the sums set opposite to our respective names in order to raise a common fund or stock for the purpose of establishing an institution for the instruction of youth in the higher branches of learning; the sole management and control of which is forever to be confined to members of the Religious Society of Friends; the nett [sic] profit of the school, not exceeding five per cent per annum in any one year, to be divided among the stockholders in the proportion of their respective shares."
