Margaret Hill Morris’ belt-chatelaine, 1754
Scope and Contents
A belt-chatelaine that belonged to Margaret Hill Morris, the wife of William Morris and the daughter of Dr. Richard Hill of Maryland and Madeira. Made in 1754 from “guinea gold” from the African gold coast, it has been impressed with ornate scenes depicting cherubs. One carved wooden ornament and one painted porcelain ornament hang from the belt-chateleine; the bottom halves of these hollow ornaments are no longer secured to the top halves. Used for holding keys, a purse, or a watch.
