Abstract Helen Rutgers Sturgis was born in 1883 in New York City. She was prepared by Miss Spence’s School. She entered Bryn Mawr with the class of 1905 on the matriculation scholarship for New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. While at Bryn Mawr, she was the secretary of the Self-Government Association and studied Languages (French, Italian, Spanish). After graduation, she worked as a magazine editor.
