Helen Rutgers Sturgis scrapbook

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: BMC-9LS-36

Scope and Contents

The Helen Sturgis scrapbook contains the one volume scrapbook of Helen Sturgis, Bryn Mawr College Class of 1905. The scrapbook, which covers Sturgis’ first two years at Bryn Mawr (1901-1903), mostly contains personal memorabilia.

The scrapbook is housed in one volume. There are many calling cards and invitations as well as a great deal of personal correspondence. Sturgis wrote either in her scrapbook or on paper a number of poems about her fellow classmates, many of them in limerick form. There are a few pieces of memorabilia related to the Class of ’05 and some unique hand-drawn pictures. A small article on “College Girls and Marriage” is also included. There are many items about campus activities, including the Christian Union, as well as floor plans for many of the college buildings.

This scrapbook offers an eclectic mixture of materials that is quite distinct from the usual Bryn Mawr memorabilia. It would be of value to anyone interested in early Bryn Mawr history, especially those curious about college activities, college buildings, and popular perceptions of women attending college.
