Edgar Zavitz Palmer (1898-1977) was a graduate of Swarthmore College, Class of 1919, and a professor of economics at several universities. This collection contains material relating to Edgar’s collection of Quaker meeting house pictures, his personal and professional correspondence, his relief work in Europe after World War I, and his son Boyd Zavitz Palmer’s application for conscientious objector status.

The John H. McCandless Papers includes the records of the Hemlock Press and personal papers of its proprietor, John H. McCandless (1920-1990). Hemlock Press, which opened in 1958, specialized in printing works of a theological or social nature, with particular concern for Quaker publications. Abstract Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J.
