Scope and Contents
The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, 1871-2015, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. Note that access is currently restricted to parts of this collection.
The collection is arranged in seven series: Series I: Memorandums and biographical information [open access]; Series II: Dean's Office records, 1871-1984 [open access]; Series III: Dean's Office files, circa 1950s-1960s [restricted access]; Series IV: Dean's Office correspondence files, circa 1980s-1990s [restricted access]; Series V: Dean Lythcott tickler files, circa 1992-2005 [restricted access], Series VI: Dean Gross files, circa 1990-2005 [restricted access], and Series VII: Dean of Diversity and Inclusion records, 2001-2015 [restricted access].

Series II: Dean's Office records, 1871-1984, is open for research use.
Series III: Dean's Office files, circa 1950s-1960s, is closed to researchers at this time. The series is unprocessed and contains records which must be restricted due to legal regulations or confidentiality issues. Researchers may not access this series until it is processed.
Series IV: Dean's Office correspondence files, circa 1980s-1990s, is closed to researchers at this time. The series is unprocessed and contains records which must be restricted due to legal regulations or confidentiality issues. Researchers may not access this series until it is processed.
Series V: Dean Lythcott tickler files, circa 1992-1997, is closed to researchers at this time. The series is unprocessed and contains records which must be restricted due to legal regulations or confidentiality issues. Researchers may not access this series until it is processed.
Series VI: Dean Gross files, circa 1990-2005, is closed to researchers at this time. The series is unprocessed and contains records which must be restricted due to legal regulations or confidentiality issues. Researchers may not access this series until it is processed.
Series VII: Dean of Diversity and Inclusion records, 2001-2015, is divided into two sub-series. The first sub-series is restricted until 2065. The second sub-series is permanently restricted, and can only be accessed by the current Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, or with the permission of the FHL Curator.
Conditions Governing Use
Copyright has not been assigned to Friends Historical Library. All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in to the Director. Permission for publication is given on behalf of Friends Historical Library as the owner of the physical items and is not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained by reader.
Biographical / Historical
Elizabeth Powell Bond was appointed the first Dean of Swarthmore College in 1890. There was a separate Dean of Men Students and Dean of Women Students until to 1975, when Thomas H. Blackburn was appointed Dean of the College with a restructured office of supporting staff. In 2015, the Dean of Students oversees vital aspects of student life, including pre-major academic advising, career services, health and psychological services, residential life, multicultural initiatives, and social and extracurricular activities.
