Collection of papers concerning John Jackson
Abstract
This is an artificial collection of papers concerning John Jackson, his spiritual teachings, and his religious mission to the West Indies. Included are essays by an unknown author, regarding John Jackson's views on Quaker ministry and doctrine as presented in his work"A Dissertation.. on Christian Ministry." An eight part manuscript entitled "Some account of the life and labors of John Jackson" is also unsigned. Also included is a bound volume of copies of letters written by John Jackson to his wife, Rachel, while he travelled on a religious mission in the West Indies with George Truman in 1840 and 1841. These letters describe the West Indies in detail and relate John Jackson's views on slavery and the difficulties they experienced as Hicksites. The original of one of these letters is also included.

Biographical / Historical
John Jackson was a noted Quaker minister. He was born the son of Halliday and Jane Jackson, of Darby, Pennsylvania, in 1809. He married Rachel Tyson, and was the founder of Sharon Female Seminary. He died in 1855.
