Although the central figure in this collection is the Philadelphia Quaker businessman and philanthropist, T. Wistar Brown (1826-1916), it also includes materials relating to his father Moses Brown, mother Mary Wistar Brown, and wife Mary Farnum Brown, along with other members of the Brown family. Among the papers are correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks and deeds.

Abigail Field Mott (1766-1851) was a Quaker writer and abolitionist. Her commonplace book includes poetry and extracts, a history of the Calliopian Society, Voyage to the Pacific Ocean by Stewart, Account of an Earthquake in Burmah in 1839, the Missionary School at Athens, account of excursion to Mt. Vesuvius, and a description of Iceland.

Abstract
Lucretia Mott was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister and a leader in reform movements, especially antislavery, education, peace, and women's rights. She was born in 1793 in Nantucket, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Anna Coffin, and educated at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess Co., N.Y. This collection contains a letter written by Richard Carpenter that was sent to Richard Mott in September of 1849. In the letter, Carpenter expresses the sadness of not having Motts company in his previous Scarsdale Friends monthly meeting in New York.
