"English Fairies, A History of Belief"

Abstract

Joseph Hutchinson Smith's "English Fairies, A History of Belief" explores the history of English belief in fairies. The manuscript is divided into two sections: "The origin and development of the belief" and "The literary expression of the belief." The manuscript includes illustrations from early sources to be included in the published volume, as well as minor edits and annotations.

This collection is made up of materials amassed by Leah J. Smith in her role as Assistant to the President (also included are some materials carried over from the Assistant to the President prior to Smith).

"On Reading Shakespeare"

Abstract

Logan Pearsall Smith's "On Reading Shakespeare,' originally published in 1933, explores Shakespeare's writing, particularly his characterization and command of language. The manuscript is handwritten and includes various edits and annotations made by Smith.

Also included are the notes on the manuscript from Scribners (where the manuscript was purchased by Christopher Morley), and a letter by Morley written at the time of his donation of the manuscript in 1952.

Abstract Pamela Colman Smith was an author, illustrator and stage designer. Born in London, she spent most of her youth in England and Jamaica. She was educated at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, which she left in 1897. In 1898, she moved to New York City, where she began selling her illustrations and exhibiting her work in galleries.
