Biographical / Historical

Byberry Hall Association was organized in 1854 when the citizens of Byberry township and vicinity decided to form a company for the purpose of erecting a building where residents could meet to hear lectures, hold elections, etc. Any person who contributed one dollar towards the building fund was considered a member and was entitled to one vote at any election. The Hall and premises were under the management of seven directors who were chosen by ballot at annual elections. Although members were not exclusively Friends, the Hall was generally under Quaker management.

With the passing of years, the building outlived its usefulness, and there was discussion about the trusteeship of the Association and the care and management of the building. The record suggests that these matters were considered by Byberry Monthly Meeting and that the Hall was eventually placed under the Meeting's care.
