Elizabeth Anna Harlan scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Elizabeth Anna Harlan scrapbook houses the scrapbook and some other ephemera of Elizabeth Anna Harlan, Bryn Mawr College class of 1909. The collection ranges from 1904-1909.
The collection consists of a one-volume scrapbook, a notebook from an English Church Architecture class, and other ephemera contained in loose folders.
The scrapbook is a form-scrapbook with places for students to fill in information about their own college. Very little is personally filled in, but the scrapbook contains pre-written statistics, poems [Wellesley and Smith Colleges], college mottoes, colors, cheers, etc. The notebook contains many cyanotypes of churches. The ephemera included consists of newspaper clippings of May Day 1908; a rolled scroll program from Medea and miscellaneous BMC programs 1904-1906; commencement program and memorabilia from 1909; May Day postcards from 1906; and 1909 class stationery.
Although little is personally filled in the scrapbook, the pre-written content gives a general picture of how women’s colleges in particular were viewed at the time. The ephemera included is typical Bryn Mawr memorabilia; however, the notebook from Harlan’s English Church Architecture class is a unique piece and might be of value to those interested in the specific classes offered by the college in the early twentieth century.
