Content Description

This is a handwritten manuscript oration by Richard Henry Holme, Haverford College Class of 1876, entitled "Christianity as a Factor in Civilization." Holme's oration won the Alumni Association Prize for Oratory in 1876. The oration details how Christianity has affected different civilizations. There are many edits and speaker notes that Holme has written in the margins and in between lines.

Biographical Note

Richard Henry Holme (1846-1921) was born in Salem County, New Jersey, to Benjamin Seeley Holme and Elizabeth Dennis. He first entered Haverford in 1865 as a member of the sophomore class but left in 1867. He returned in 1873 to complete his degree program. He married Pauline Waddington in 1883. Holme was a farmer and a dealer in milk. He was also the Superintendent of Schools for Salem County and the Superintendent of Schools for the City of Salem. He later moved to Maryland where he was a candidate for the U.S. Senate from that state.
