Biographical / Historical
The Committee on Education of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends acts primarily as an advisory and consultative body. It has various funds at its disposal for use in assisting Friends schools and individual Quakers in the Yearly Meeting. The first Education Committee was appointed by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833 to survey the state of schools and of education within its limits; this Committee was laid down in 1837. Likewise, the Orthodox Yearly Meeting named a similar group in 1842; this standing committee was discontinued in 1847. In 1843, the Hicksites appointed a Standing Committee in to encourage the establishment of libraries and to support education; this body was released in 1864. The Hicksites appointed a new joint Committee on Education and Schools in 1872, to encourage the further establishment of Friends' schools and Quaker education. In 1950, this body, renamed the Committee on Education since 1896, joined with its Orthodox counterpart, which had been reformed in 1875, to merge into a Joint Committee on Education, before the actual reunification of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. In 1974, the work of this committee was placed under the oversight of the Coordinating Committee for Section 1 (CC-1), for the Education/Care of Members. An Education Standing Committee replaced the Coordinating Committee in 1998.

Abstract
The Committee on Education of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends acts primarily as an advisory and consultative body. It has various funds at its disposal for use in assisting Friends schools and individual Quakers in the Yearly Meeting. An Education Committee was first appointed by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833 to survey the state of education within its limits. Hicksites and Orthodox Friends subsequently named a sucession of subroups on education and libraries until the 1870's when both branches formed more permanent committees. In 1950, the Hicksites joined with the Orthodox to merge their respective groups into a Joint Committee on Education, before the actual reunification of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. The records of the committees include minutes, Executive Committee minutes, and Extension Committee minutes. Also includes records of the Mary Jeanes Loan Committee and the Anne P. Townsend Fund.
