Biographical / Historical
The Friend’s Working Group on the Environment of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was originally formed at the 1975 Yearly Meeting as the Working Group on Nuclear Energy to address a concern on nuclear power plant legislation. At the 1977 Yearly Meeting, the group recommended that it be continued under the name of Working Group on Energy, and its focus shifted from the debate on nuclear power to conservation and consciousness of energy among Friends. In 1980 the group reported irresolvable differences amongst its members on the issue of nuclear power, and seems to have stopped meeting from 1981 to 1983, at which point the concern of nuclear power was taken up by both the Special Peace Project and the New Call to Peacemaking. The Working Group on Stewardship of the Environment was created in 1984 and presented its mission to the 1985 Yearly Meeting as preserving God’s Creation through education and conservation. The group continued its work under various names, eventually becoming the Friend’s Environmental Working Group, through 1992.
