Sarah Coates Harris scrapbooks
Abstract
The collection is composed of three scrapbooks compiled by Sarah Coates Harris, Quaker reformer and naturalist of Galena, Illinois. Scrapbook 1 contains newspaper clippings that reflect Harris' activities in horticultural, temperance, suffrage, and other civic endeavors as well as biographical information about her husband and local history. Scrapbook 2 contains botanical cards organized by the month of flowering and a small number of images of the Gould Mine in Nevada. Scrapbook 3 contains her collection of lithographed trade and greeting cards.

Biographical / Historical
Sarah Coates Harris (1824-1886) was the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Charrington Coates, members of Bradford Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania. In 1847, she married Daniel Smith Harris, a riverboat captain, mining entrepreneur, and early settler of Galena, Illinois. She was a dedicated reformer, naturalist, lecturer, and physician, serving as the chairman of the Botany Committee of the Jo Daviess County Horticultural Society, president of the Ladies Temperance Union of Galena, and of the Union Freedmen's Aid Association. She was also active in Soldiers Monument Association and the women's suffrage movement, contributing articles, letters and reports for publication. At age forty-five she entered medical school at the Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago and practiced until her death in 1886.
