Abstract

This collection includes letters received by Anne E. Sheppard from members of her family, including her mother, Margaret G. Sheppard, and her cousins John W. Biddle, Martha H. Garrett, Rebecca C. Sheppard, and Mary M. Sheppard. Of these the most extensive are those of Martha H. Garrett, describing the daily life, education, and concerns of a young Quaker woman in Philadelphia in the 1860's. Especially interesting are her accounts of Freedmen's relief work and of her unorthodox practice of physical exercise.

Biographical / Historical

Anne E. Sheppard was a birthright Friend, born in 1842 to John E. and Margaret (Garrett) Sheppard. She married James Starr Lippincott and was a member of Germantown (Pa.) Monthly Meeting. She died in 1915.
