This collection includes the exercise book of Thomas R. Smith and a list of losses he sustained during the Civil War. Also included is a letter from J. Russell Smith, his son, explaining provenance of the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas R. Smith was born in 1833, the son of Jonas and Miriam Smith. He was a Quaker and a member of Goose Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends in Lincoln, Virginia. He married Ellen Haines in 1859 and died in 1914.
