Biographical / Historical
Anne Willis (1747-1828) was the daughter of Thomas and Hannah Seaman of Westbury Monthly Meeting. In 1770 she married Fry Willis (1744-1820), also a birthright member of Westbury. In 1789 Jericho Monthly Meeting was set off from Westbury. Anne's son, Thomas, born 1771, married Phebe Searing in 1795. Anne Willis was an Elder and minister, as were her son and daughter-in-law. In 1826 in response to the annual Queries, Anne Willis, with the support of Thomas and Phebe, objected to agreeing that the Meeting was in unity; the Willises had serious concerns about the views of Elias Hicks, a member of the same meeting. The Willises wanted their concern to be taken before the Quarterly Meeting and were accused of being out of unity. After the Hicksite Separation in 1828, Anne and her family were members of Westbury and Jericho Monthly Meeting (Orthodox), and she was restored to the ministry.
