Biographical / Historical
Caleb McComber (1769-1850) was an Orthodox Quaker minister of Farmington, New York. He was born at Dartmouth, Mass., and was received at East Hoosick Monthly Meeting in 1786 from Acoxet Monthly Meeting. His family was part of a migration of Quakers from Massachusetts to Upstate New York in the late 18th century. He and his wife Esther moved to Easton Monthly Meeting in 1799. He was one of the founders of a worship group at Farmington that became a preparative meeting in 1794 and a monthly meeting in 1803. In 1828, the Meeting divided into Hicksite and Orthodox groups, with McComber leading the removal of the Orthodox group from the Meeting. McComber became a minister at an early age, traveling widely, and served for fifty-one years.
