Scope and Contents

The collection contains Quaker correspondence concerning various states' regulations on military conscription and conscientious objection in the early 19th century. A letter from Charles Gilbert, 2mo 12 1812, gives an account of imprisonments in Connecticut. The remaining letters were sent in 1821 including a detailed explanation from William Rotch of New Bedford, Rhode Island, dated 8 mo 28, 1821. Most letters are addressed to Samuel Parsons, clerk of New York Yearly Meeting. The correspondents reported on the regulations in Connecticut, New York State, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Ohio.

Because the right of conscientious objection was not guaranteed in the U. S. Constitution, regulations were left to the individual states to determine.
